Choosing the right running shoes based on your foot type and running style is critical for comfort and injury prevention. For pronated feet, where the foot rolls inward excessively, stability or motion-control shoes provide the necessary support. Neutral runners, whose feet roll inward slightly, benefit from neutral cushioning shoes that offer balanced support. Supinated feet, which roll outward, require shoes with extra cushioning to absorb impact. Arch level is another consideration. High arches need cushioned shoes for shock absorption, while low arches benefit from stability shoes. Heel strikers, who land on their heels, should look for shoes with ample heel cushioning. Additionally, midfoot and forefoot strikers need shoes with cushioning in the midfoot and forefoot areas. Runners can experience foot injuries from wearing shoes that do not fit their running needs. If this applies to you, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist who can treat any foot condition, and guide you on how to choose the right running shoes for you.

If you are a runner, wearing the right running shoe is essential. For more information, contact Bryan Sullivan, DPM from Mississippi Foot Center . Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Choosing the Right Running Shoe for Your Foot Type

To increase performance and avoid the risk of injury, it is important to choose the right running shoe based on your foot type. The general design of running shoes revolves around pronation, which is how the ankle rolls from outside to inside when the foot strikes the ground.

  • Neutral runners are able to choose from a wide variety of shoes, including minimalist shoes or even going barefoot.
  • Runners who overpronate, or experience an over-abundance of ankle rolling, should choose shoes that provide extra motion control and stability.
  • Runners who underpronate, or supinate, have feet that have high arches and lack flexibility, preventing shock absorption. They require shoes with more flexibility and cushion.

For ballet dancers, strong and flexible feet are essential for mastering intricate movements with precision and grace. Various foot stretches and exercises can help strengthen the muscles and improve the articulation of the feet. Using a hair elastic around the toes to create resistance while pointing and flexing helps develop intrinsic foot muscles. Thera bands provide resistance for exercises such as ankle dorsiflexion and plantarflexion, enhancing ankle stability and strength. Towel scrunches, where dancers use their toes to gather a hand towel, target the muscles of the feet and toes. Practicing tennis ball massages can alleviate tension and promote flexibility in the arches. Exercises like doming, toe teasers, and piano toes engage different foot muscles, enhancing overall strength and control. If you have injured your foot due to ballet moves, it is suggested that you visit a podiatrist who can offer appropriate treatment and guide you toward additional stretching techniques.

Stretching the feet is a great way to prevent injuries. If you have any concerns with your feet consult with Bryan Sullivan, DPM from Mississippi Foot Center . Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Stretching the Feet

Being the backbone of the body, the feet carry your entire weight and can easily become overexerted, causing cramps and pain. As with any body part, stretching your feet can serve many benefits. From increasing flexibility to even providing some pain relief, be sure to give your feet a stretch from time to time. This is especially important for athletes or anyone performing aerobic exercises, but anyone experiencing foot pain or is on their feet constantly should also engage in this practice.

Great ways to stretch your feet:

  • Crossing one leg over the others and carefully pull your toes back. Do 10-20 repetitions and repeat the process for each foot
  • Face a wall with your arms out and hands flat against the wall. Step back with one foot and keep it flat on the floor while moving the other leg forward. Lean towards the wall until you feel a stretch. Hold for 30 seconds and perform 10 repetitions for each foot
  • Be sure not to overextend or push your limbs too hard or you could risk pulling or straining your muscle

Individuals who tend to their feet by regular stretching every day should be able to minimize foot pain and prevent new problems from arising.

Causes and Impact of Sever’s Disease

Sever's disease affects children and adolescents, particularly those engaged in physical activities like sports. It is not a disease but rather a disorder caused by inflammation of the growth plate in the heel bone, known as the calcaneal apophysis. This inflammation results from repetitive stress or tension on the heel bone, often during periods of rapid growth and development. Sever's disease typically affects children between the ages of eight and 14, when the growth plate is still open and vulnerable to injury. Activities that involve running, jumping, or high-impact movements can lead to heel pain, swelling, and tenderness, especially during or after physical activity. Sever's disease is not usually serious and typically resolves with rest and conservative treatments like stretching and heel cushions. However, it can temporarily limit a child's participation in sports and other activities, emphasizing the importance of proper management and injury prevention strategies. If your active child is complaining of heel pain, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist who can properly diagnose and treat Sever’s disease.

Sever's disease often occurs in children and teens. If your child is experiencing foot or ankle pain, see Bryan Sullivan, DPM from Mississippi Foot Center . Our doctor can treat your child’s foot and ankle needs.

Sever’s Disease

Sever’s disease is also known as calcaneal apophysitis, which is a medical condition that causes heel pain I none or both feet. The disease is known to affect children between the ages of 8 and 14.

Sever’s disease occurs when part of the child’s heel known as the growth plate (calcaneal epiphysis) is attached to the Achilles tendon. This area can suffer injury when the muscles and tendons of the growing foot do not keep pace with bone growth. Therefore, the constant pain which one experiences at the back of the heel will make the child unable to put any weight on the heel. The child is then forced to walk on their toes.

Symptoms

Acute pain – Pain associated with Sever’s disease is usually felt in the heel when the child engages in physical activity such as walking, jumping and or running.

Highly active – Children who are very active are among the most susceptible in experiencing Sever’s disease, because of the stress and tension placed on their feet.

Uncomfortable Foot Pain

Feet endure a lot of stress, carrying our body weight over countless miles throughout a lifetime. This constant use can lead to various sources of foot pain, making even basic activities like walking painful. A common cause of foot pain includes plantar fasciitis, characterized by sharp heel pain due to inflammation of the tissue connecting the heel to the toes. Bunions, which are bony bumps forming at the base of the big toe, can also cause significant discomfort. Flat feet, where the arches collapse, can lead to pain and fatigue in the feet and legs. Additionally, arthritis can affect the joints in the feet, leading to chronic pain and stiffness. Treatments for foot pain vary depending on the cause but often include rest, compression, and elevation. Orthotic inserts and wearing proper footwear can also provide relief. In more severe cases, medical interventions such as corticosteroid injections or surgery may be necessary. If you are experiencing persistent foot pain, it is suggested that you see a podiatrist for a proper diagnosis and a tailored treatment plan.
